The first SAVEMEDCOASTS interview: Xenia Loizidou interviews Nikos Tornaritis, MP of the Democratic Rally Party (DISY), on sea level rise in Cyprus
ISOTECH’s Director, Xenia Loizidou, interviewed Mr Tornaritis, Member of the Cyprus Parliament with the Democratic Rally Party, on the issue of sea level rise in Cyprus: current knowledge, gaps and needs, and possible solutions. This was the first of a series of specifically structured interviews with targeted key stakeholders in Cyprus, Greece and Italy that ISOTECH is implementing as part of the first activity of the SAVEMEDCOASTS “Sea level rise scenarios along Mediterranean coasts” Project.
Mr Tornaritis provided important insights, highlighting that although Cyprus is an island, sea level rise is not a priority and does not form part of any policies or strategies. He noted that one of the first steps to rectify this is to bring the issue to the attention of the parliament. Mr Tornaritis promised to do so by submitting a parliamentary question addressed to both the Minister of Environment and the Minister of Education, so they can inform the Parliament in which ways sea level rise is incorporated into the policies and activities of their Ministries.
