Cypriot Researchers awarded by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation for their Green and Circular Ports Initiative in the Mediterranean
A team of Cypriot ISOTECH ltd researchers, has been awarded the highly significant international recognition of the BeMed Foundation, supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. The award concerns the new project, “Green and Circular Ports for a Litter-Free Mediterranean,” supported by Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed).
This initiative aims to tackle marine plastic pollution in the Mediterranean by improving waste management practices in ports and aboard vessels, setting a new standard for sustainability in maritime transport.
The Mediterranean is one of the most heavily affected regions by plastic waste, posing serious threats to marine ecosystems, human health, and local economies. Cyprus, as a Mediterranean island, is particularly vulnerable to the impact of plastic pollution but also represents a unique opportunity to pioneer solutions.
Building on its previous work funded by BeMed, Isotech’s new project focuses on implementing innovative waste reduction and management solutions across five Mediterranean ports, enhancing both port facilities and onboard practices.
The project’s milestones and results will be presented at European Maritime Day in 2026, showcasing its progress and impact on the Mediterranean’s marine environment. In addition to BeMed’s financial support, the project will participate in the CapiMed-Islands programme, a platform designed to:
- Foster collaboration between Mediterranean islands and similar projects.
- Share best practices and solutions with other regions.
- Enhance visibility and awareness of innovative approaches to combatting marine waste.
The CapiMed-Islands programme is coordinated by MedWaves and SMILO and funded by BeMed, reflecting a comprehensive effort to drive positive change across the Mediterranean.
Dr Xenia Loizidou, Director of ISOTECH stated: “This is a prestigious award, and a significant recognition of our work, by a very important organisation, the Prince Albert of Monaco Foundation, BeMed. An award that enables us to transfer our know-how and implement innovative solutions in Mediterranean ports. Mediterranean ports can be at the forefront of the green transition, improve their operations and reduce their costs. I believe that we will have very good results. We thank BeMed for the support and are excited about this significant recognition.”
