Project Title: A Shipping Commitment Against Plastic Pollution in the Mediterranean
Funded By: Beyond Plastic Med (www.beyondplasticmed.org)
Topic of the initiative:
ISOTECH’s previous BeMed Initiative “Cruise Ships against Plastic Pollution in the Mediterranean” brought together, for the first time, stakeholders from the entire Cypriot shipping industry value chain in a participatory setting that resulted in the development of a Policy Tool and Action Plan outlining measures to minimise plastic consumption and optimise waste management.
This project aims to build on the success of ISOTECH’s previous initiative and continue the momentum and enthusiasm that it has created, by establishing “The Plastic Free Shipping Core Group”, which will work towards the annual evaluation of the Action Plan’s achievement and the setting of detailed action plans for the following years. The Cypriot Deputy Ministry of Shipping’s support for this initiative will ensure its success.
Specific objectives:
This initiative aims to achieve the following specific objectives:
- Assembling and mobilizing allies for minimising plastic waste pollution from the shipping industry.
- Establishment of the Plastic Free Shipping Core Group.
- Engagement of shipping industry key actors towards the continuous implementation of actions that aim towards plastic waste minimisation.
- Recommendations and support for the implementation and enforcement of policies.
- Spread the word and raise awareness about the initiative, its funding, and the actions that the industry can take to minimise plastic pollution.
Progress:
A participatory workshop for shipping industry stakeholders was implemented on October 5th, 2022 as a side event to the 9th Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference. Find out more.
