SeaClear 2.0: An autonomous robotic system coupled with civic activation to address marine litter, European Commission – Horizon Europe (01 January 2023 – 31 December 2027)

SeaClear 2.0 attempts to use robots to combat one of the world’s most serious environmental issues: marine litter. The new EU-funded initiative will deploy a fleet of smart robots to identify and remove marine debris. The system employs a combination of aerial drones, underwater rovers, autonomous surface ships, and custom-built robotic grippers to do this. Using artificial intelligence, robots can autonomously identify, locate, and collect litter on their own.

SEALIVE- Strategies for circular economy and advanced bio-based solutions to prevent plastic contamination and keep our lands and seas alive, European Commission – Horizon 2020 Programme, 1/10/2019 – 31/09/2023

SEALIVE is a 48-month innovation action project with 24 partners from 11 countries across Europe. The project aims to bring together business model driven strategies with advanced bio-plastics, sorting and recycling processes for the development and implementation of reusable, recyclable, compostable or biodegradable use cases. Through close feedback between individual work packages, SEALIVE aims to create a synergistic series of innovative strategies that will enable improvements across the bio-based materials and innovative end-of-life technologies.

MEDA TEN-T – MEDiterranean And Trans-European Networks for Transport, (August 2002 – Dec. 2004).

Project funded by the European Union, Fifth Framework Programme, Confirming the International Role of Community Research, 2002.
The project established a long-term basis a network of Transport Experts from around the Mediterranean. This is expected to enhance the common understanding of transport issues and promote the interconnectivity of transport networks in the Mediterranean area. The MEDA TEN-T network worked on defining steps for the progressive construction of a common information system which formed the backbone for the construction of a Decision Support System (DSS) and an Action Plan. “Development and pilot application of innovative techniques for the treatment of industrial sludge, containing dangerous substances with focus on heavy metals”. (June 2001 – June 2003)

Research Project funded by the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus, 4th Research Scheme, project number 13/2001). Total Budget: 90000 Euro.
Partners: National Technical University of Athens (Department of Chemical Engineerign) and ISOTECH ltd Environmental Consultants-Researchers. Several techniques and materials for the stabilization/ solidification of heavily polluted industrial sludge, were tested. A multicriteria analysis was developed to identify the best available technique to manage industrial sludge with high concentration of heavy metals. Several characterization techniques for the evaluation of raw and treated sludge as well as the final products, were also tested. The final products after the application of all waste treatment techniques, were compared with the limits set by the relevant EU regulations in order to identify the possible end users or/and disposal sites.

Design, construction and operation of the first research-based pilot composting plant for the co-treatment (co-composting) of solid and liquid effluents from olive oil mills and their biotransformation to soil conditioner. (1999 – Jan. 2003)

Research Project. Funded by the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus. Total Budget: 100,000 Euro. Major partners: ISOTECH ltd (Project Manager) and the Department of Chemical Engineering, Laboratory of waste treatment, National Technical University of Athens, Greece.
